When we think of professional soccer in the last 15 years, several of the greatest and most famous players of this generation will surely come to mind; but if we consider the most talented Latin American footballers of recent times, by far, there is only one individual that is worth mentioning... and that is Lionel Messi.
Though short of stature, this giant of football showed great skill with the ball from a very young age, even after he had been diagnosed as a child with something that could’ve cut short his dreams: an unfortunate growth hormone deficiency. However, this diagnosis would not stop his passion for the sport that has brought him worldwide fame and recognition, nor would it separate him from what some would call his destiny.
This is episode 15, and today we will tell you how a boy from an Argentine province managed to make history in world soccer and how he is still breaking records at an age when many lesser players have retired. Meet Lionel Messi and his path to greatness…

Un niño que se convirtió en el prodigio de toda una generación. Un argentino que dejó a su país en lo más alto de la historia del fútbol. Un hombre que se volvió ídolo e inspiración para personas de todas las edades alrededor del mundo. Es Lionel Messi.
El día 24 de junio de 1987 en la ciudad de Rosario, en la provincia de Santa Fe (Argentina), nació Lionel Andrés Messi Cuccittini. Sus padres, Jorge Messi y Celia Cuccittini, tuvieron a Leo después de Rodrigo y Matías, pero antes de María Sol, lo que significa que es el tercero de los cuatro hijos del matrimonio.
Jorge Messi deseaba llamar a su hijo Lionel porque él era un gran fanático del cantante Lionel Richie. Es bien sabido que Lionel (el futbolista) y Lionel (el cantante) tienen una bonita amistad hoy en día, pero que el astro del fútbol prefiere llevar el apodo de Leo.
Episode 15: Lionel Messi, the Flea Who Made History A child who became the prodigy for an entire generation. An Argentine who made a name for his country in the history of soccer. A man who became an idol and inspiration for people of all ages around the world. He is Lionel Messi. Lionel Andrés Messi Cuccittini was born on June 24, 1987 in the city of Rosario, in the province of Santa Fe (Argentina). His parents, Jorge Messi and Celia Cuccittini, had Leo after Rodrigo and Matías, but before María Sol, making him the third of the couple's four children. Jorge Messi wanted to name his son Lionel because he was a huge fan of the singer Lionel Richie. It is well known that Lionel (the soccer player) and Lionel (the singer) have a lovely friendship nowadays, but the soccer star prefers to go by the nickname Leo.

Jugaba Grandoli, la categoría del 86 (un año más que yo), y faltaba un jugador, y mi abuela le empezó a decir al técnico, al que conocía de toda la vida: ‘Ponelo’. Y el técnico: ‘No, no’. Mi abuela, de nuevo: ‘Ponelo’. Y el técnico: ‘No, no’. Y empezaron a discutir e intercambiaron un par de palabras, algo así como: ‘Metelo a este’. Y el técnico: ‘No. ¿Qué lo voy a poner? ¡Mirá lo chiquito que es! ¿Estás loca? ¡Le van a hacer mal!’. Y ella le decía: ‘Metelo, que te va a salvar el partido’. Entonces, al final me puso. Se ve que entré, que hice un par de cosas, metí dos goles, y, bueno, a partir de allí… Volvió mi abuela y le dijo: ‘Comprale botines, que la semana próxima lo llevo a entrenar’. Y ahí arrancamos”.
Esta es la razón por la que aún hoy en día se puede ver a Messi tantas veces celebrando con sus compañeros y levantando sus manos y su mirada hacia el cielo, en honor a su abuela Celia, quien murió en el año 1998, cuando él tenía casi 11 años. A pesar de que fue hace tanto tiempo, Leo le agradece con todo su corazón por haberlo inspirado, consentido y apoyado mientras pudo. Por eso también le dedica sus goles, pues sabe que, si ella siguiera con vida, se sentiría muy orgullosa de él, continuaría apoyándolo y dándole tanto amor, viéndolo y vitoreándolo desde las gradas, seguramente.

And we started from there.” This is why nowadays Messi can still so often be seen celebrating with his teammates and raising his hands and gaze to the sky, in honor of his grandmother Celia, who died in 1998 when he was almost 11 years old. Despite being a long time ago, Leo thanks her with all his heart for having inspired, supported, and believed in him while she could. That is why he also dedicates his goals to her, as he knows that were she still alive, she would surely be very proud of him, would continue supporting him and showering him with love, and going to see him and cheer him on from the stands.

But this child, who used to be smaller than the rest of his peers, did not last long at this club near his home. When he was six years old, he began playing for Newell’s Old Boys Athletic Club, a well-known club in Rosario, where he spent the next few years of his life demonstrating his potential and surprising everyone with his soccer skills. But a few years went by, and his family began to realize that something was not right... It was no longer simply that Leo was shorter than the rest of his peers, but that his body looked like that of a child at least two years younger. When they took him to the specialist in endocrinology, their worst fears were confirmed: he was diagnosed with a Growth Hormone Deficiency (or GHD).

What happened next was that, after the respective talks between representatives for the Barcelona team and for Leo, the soccer player traveled with his father to Catalonia, Spain to finish discussing the terms of the negotiation. One of the most amazing soccer stories came out of this trip, a hiring in a bar that would make history for one of the most important teams in Spain and Europe, the acclaimed Barça. Did you know that the first written agreement to sign Messi was signed on a napkin? And on that napkin, which was held under the strictest of security measures in a safe in a bank in Andorra, you can read the following: “In Barcelona, on Dec. 14, 2000, in the presence of Messrs. Minguella and Horacio, Carles Rexach, Soccer Club Barcelona's sports director, hereby agrees, under his responsibility and regardless of any dissenting opinions, to sign the player Lionel Messi provided that we keep to the amounts agreed upon.”

Horacio Gaggioli, for his part, is a soccer agent who, according to some sources, represented Messi’s interests at that time, and Carles Rexach was a former soccer player as well as coach at the club. This meeting at a bar sealed the deal, and these three men exerted quite an important influence at FC Barcelona. It is said that it went down something like this: two talent scouts or recruiters realized Messi’s potential and River Plate’s interest in signing him. Then, they got in touch with Gaggioli and made him aware of this possible star. Gaggioli studied the situation and contacted Minguella, who finally spoke with Rexach to open his eyes to the opportunity before them, as he seemed quite promising. Lionel Messi, one of the greatest soccer players in history, started at a very young age in a team that played near his home when he was just a little boy, motivated by his grandmother. After spending a couple of years playing there, he went on to play for Newell’s Old Boys Club for a few more years. But everyone got worried when Leo was taken to an endocrinologist and diagnosed with Growth Hormone Deficiency.
At first, his family made a great effort to pay for Lionel’s treatment, until a couple of agents from the great FC Barcelona realized his potential and tried to sign him as soon as possible, assuming all the expenses and paperwork this implied. Then began the glorious career that led Messi to write his name forever in soccer history, breaking numerous records and winning countless awards in his career, both with Barcelona and as an individual.
On the side of his private life, Messi has been married to his longtime girlfriend and mother of his three children since 2017, having met when they were both infants and being close longtime friends. In 2021, Messi’s long and very prolific career with Barcelona came to an end, but a new era began with Paris Saint-Germain, one that has already reaped some success.
Despite being constantly compared to Cristiano Ronaldo and despite the fact that it is not known what the future holds for this star, what is certain is that his name will remain forever written in the history of soccer...
